Community
Assistance Fund Overview
The goal of the
Community Assistance Fund (CAF) is to respond to the financial needs of
non-profit organizations within the Champaign-Urbana area.
Organizations that receive funds are involved in projects or programs that
coincide with the Junior League of Champaign-Urbana's Position
Statements. An announcement for applications is publicized and the grants
are determined by the Community Assistance Fund Committee. Awards are made in the fall and spring of each
year. From 1999 to Spring of 2007, $57,845.90 has been awarded to
community groups and programs.

The Public Affairs Committee encourages League members to be informed active
citizens. We coordinate all League advocacy efforts. Public Affairs
works with other community groups and members of League to gather and
disseminate appropriate information regarding local and statewide advocacy
efforts and to provide opportunities to involve the membership in these
efforts.
Kids in the Kitchen
In February of
2006, Junior Leagues from across four countries implemented an international
initiative called Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen, designed to help communities
address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition.
In its first year, more
than 200 Junior Leagues participated in the program and provided educational
initiatives for children and families in their communities. To date, media
coverage has reached over 80 million people with messages about the issues
surrounding childhood obesity and the Junior League's initiative to address
these.
Junior Leagues' Kids
in the Kitchen
was recently deemed an ongoing awareness intiative for the Association of Junior
Leagues International Inc. Activities for the program's second year will
focus around March, which incorporates National Nutrition Month in the United
States and Canada.
Individual Leagues from
across the Association will again host educational events in their local
communities. Events will range from partnering with local chefs who gave
cooking demonstrations in schools and community centers to hands-on grocery
store tours that show kids and parents nutritious and affordable ways to
select recipe ingredients and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Leagues are
conducting programs in partnership with local community organizations in
order to raise awareness and provide solutions for the growing health
problems associated with childhood obesity.
The Association of Junior Leagues International is also expanding its
website, which provides materials to support the initiative including recipes
and tips on nutrition. The website features a variety regularly updated
resources to help teach children healthy eating habits, such as a virtual
recipe collection from celebrity chefs, local restaurateurs, celebrity moms
and nutrition experts. Click here to visit the AJLI Kids in the Kitchen portion of the website.
This League-wide initiative not only addresses a growing problem facing
today's children but also honors the Junior League's long heritage of impact
on family nutrition over the past 105 years. As Junior Leagues' Kids in
the Kitchen
continues, Leagues look forward to building upon Kids in the Kitchen’s
impressive first year and continuing to address the important issues related
to childhood obesity and poor nutrition.

Once again
the Provisional Class is coordinating our efforts this year as their
Provisional Class Project. Chef JL Ledent of Bevier Hall has once again
agreed to help us with our KITK project. The Mettler Center has donated
some of their personnel to help with the fitness portion, and Garden Hills
School will select 20-25 students to participate in this special field
trip. The kids will arrive by bus to Bevier Hall at 1:30 on April 25th
and begin the fitness portion of our project headed up by the Mettler Center
and our JL volunteers. The students will then move to the cooking
section where they will meet Chef JL and be appointed to their appropriate
food stations. They will each be handed their own personalized healthy
recipe book and sent back to school by bus in time for the school bell.
Stay informed about
this initiative and keep your eyes and ears open for more information. If you
have any questions about this program or would like to get involved, please
contact Janet Murray, JLCU President, at 356-5880.
